Dog Product Reviews Evaluation Criteria

Last updated: 26th July 2026

1. Purpose of Our Reviews

We publish independent opinions to help dog owners understand how everyday products perform in normal use. Our reviews look at practical features, usability, and general consumer experience.

We may refer to basic training or behaviour concepts connected to product use (for example, enrichment or lead control). This information is educational only. We do not provide professional behavioural advice or guarantee results for individual dogs.

Our reviews may include physical handling, general observations, available information and, where applicable, everyday use experience, depending on the product and the information available at the time of review. They reflect the product at the time of review and do not constitute scientific, veterinary, or safety testing. They do not involve formal long-term durability testing or extended product trials.

2. What We Review (and Do Not Review)

We Review

Physical consumer dog products, including items such as:

  • toys

  • beds and crates

  • grooming tools

  • harnesses, collars, and leads

  • everyday accessories and equipment

Reviews may include observations about:

  • everyday usability

  • build quality

  • maintenance, storage, and handling

We Do Not Review

We do not review or evaluate:

  • ingestible products (food, treats, chews, supplements, edible toys)

  • items marketed to treat medical, behavioural, or therapeutic conditions

  • products requiring veterinary, medical, scientific, or safety assessment

We do not certify product safety, suitability, toxicity, or regulatory compliance.

3. How We Evaluate Products

Understanding Our Review Process

Our reviews may include one or more of the following, depending on the product and how it has been evaluated:

Physical handling – We physically examine a product to assess aspects such as its build quality, materials, finish, design, features and general usability.

General observations – Our independent observations and opinions formed during the review process.

Available information – Relevant information provided on product packaging or made publicly available by manufacturers or retailers where appropriate.

Everyday use experience (where applicable) – For some products, we also include observations from normal day-to-day use. Not every review includes everyday use experience, and where it does not, we do not imply that it has.

Products may be assessed using one or more of the following criteria:

Criteria What It Assesses
Build Quality Overall build, materials, stitching, finish, and how the item appears during physical handling.
Design & Usability Practical design, general usability, comfort impressions, and how the design appears to support typical everyday use.
Condition & Feel The visible condition, material feel, and general impression observed during physical handling, without assessing longevity, strength, or extended use.
Ease of Setup Initial assembly, installation, or first-time setup based on physical handling and general observations.
Ease of Use Handling comfort, convenience, and user experience based on physical handling and, where applicable, everyday use.
Features Included functions, adjustability, and how useful these features appear in typical household situations
Maintenance Cleaning, storage, and general care requirements as observed during physical handling and general interaction.
Everyday Performance How the item appears to function in typical, non-specialist, everyday situations according to its intended consumer purpose

Not all categories apply to every product. Our assessments are based on one or more of the review methods described above, depending on the product and the information available at the time of review. Everyday Performance is only scored where we have sufficient first-hand experience of the product through everyday use and may be omitted where a product has been physically handled but not used.

4. How We Score Products & Calculate an Overall Verdict

When a score is shown, we rate individual criteria (see Section 3) on a 0–5 scale using one or more of the review methods described in Section 3, depending on the product and the information available at the time of review.

Individual Criterion Score Meaning:

Score Meaning
0 Very Poor
1 Poor
2 Average
3 Good
4 Very Good
5 Excellent

Individual criterion scores may be displayed as a value out of 5 (for example, 4/5) for ease of reading.

Overall Average Score:

Once individual criteria have been scored, we calculate an overall average. This becomes our overall product score and reflects our overall assessment of the product at the time of review.

This score and any corresponding written verdict are not intended as recommendations, endorsements, or guidance on whether a product should be purchased.

Example Calculation (Illustrative Only):

For example, if a product receives individual scores of 4, 4, 5, 4, and 3 across five criteria, the overall average score would be 4.0 out of 5. This overall score determines the corresponding written verdict and star rating according to our published score ranges.

Overall Score and Verdict Categories:

Score Range Written Verdict What It Indicates
0.0–0.9 Very Poor Very limited overall impression.
1.0–1.9 Poor A below average overall impression.
2.0–2.9 Average An average overall impression.
3.0–3.9 Good A good overall impression.
4.0–5.0 Very Good A very good overall impression.

Star Rating:

Alongside the numeric score (for example, 4.2 out of 5), we display a corresponding star rating. The number of filled stars reflects the overall average score and provides a simple visual summary of our overall assessment at the time of review. The star rating is a visual representation of the same overall score and does not represent a separate or additional evaluation.

About the Green Tick Icon:

The green tick indicates that we have physically handled the product as part of our review process. It does not necessarily indicate everyday use experience. It is not a certification, endorsement, or safety guarantee.

5. Pricing, Images, and Availability

Images, descriptions, and prices may change without notice. We recommend checking current details directly with manufacturers or retailers before purchasing.

Price Position

Where shown, Price Position reflects our general impression of where a product appeared to sit within its market category at the time of review. It is intended as a broad indication only and is not based on fixed price thresholds. Prices may change over time and readers should check current retailer or manufacturer pricing for up-to-date information.

6. No Professional, Safety, or Medical Claims

Our evaluations do not replace advice from qualified professionals. We do not provide:

  • veterinary or medical assessments

  • nutritional guidance

  • behavioural treatment advice

  • safety certification

Always follow manufacturer instructions and seek appropriate professional guidance where required.
